Fibromyalgia(FIBRO) is a condition in which your body is in extreme pain (mostly muscoskeletal), fatigue, drowsiness and general malaise.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition in which your body is in extreme pain (mostly muscoskeletal), fatigue, drowsiness and general malaise. It is often accompanied by depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. The extreme pain is experienced due to a malfunction by which the brain perceives pain signals as more amplified. Fibromyalgia is more widespread in women, and can be quite debilitating as the body becomes fatigued and exhausted.  Fibromyalgia seems to be triggered by either severe stress mental and physiological trauma, or when the body is weakened, due to surgery or infection.

What are the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

The primary symptoms of fibromyalgia are chronic pain, disturbed sleep patterns, fatigue and occasionally intense, almost nerve-wrecking pain. Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, depression and mood swings also may arise. These are usually accompanied with psycho-somatic related issues such as insomnia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc. Some people may also experience “FibroFog”, a cognitive malfunction that causes sporadic losses of short term memory, and disrupted concentration, affecting cognitive functioning and the ability to perform tasks with ease and speed. Fatigue and tiredness is possibly from dealing with the intense pain.  Other symptoms of Fibromyalgia include myofascial pain, palpitations, muscle spasms, nerve pain and weakness in the lower extremities.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

Western medicine still does not have a complete understanding of how exactly Fibromyalgia occurs, although it is known that there is some genetic prevalence.  Certain people that have a gene for it, have aa nervous system that is possibly sensitive to psychological trauma, and its correlation along the nervous pathway. An intense event such as heavy emotional trauma, stress or a weakening because of infection or bodily trauma (surgery or accident) could activate the nerve impulses that trigger the brain to be over-reactive to stimulus. As if a recognized memory of the pain, makes the patient experience the pain with more intensity. This is not only because of a psychological mechanism, but an over-impingement of neurotransmitters, that carry pain signals to receptors in certain regions of the brain. This is possibly why there is an accompanied depressive state, as the neural pathways for pain and depression root from the same region. An emotional trigger that has built a cognitive relation to the memory of that pain, could activate this pathway, causing all other preceding symptoms to present themselves.

What is the Treatment for Fibromyalgia?

Treatment for fibromyalgia is mainly symptomatic. Doctors and Medical practitioners will prescribe medications to help deal with or relieve the pain. Drugs such as Cymbalta, neurontin, Lyrica have been found to be effective in pain management in fibromyalgia. One should however be aware of the side-effects especially associated with long term use. Most of these medications are ‘desensitizers’, i.e. they numb your nervous pathways, or block the brains receptors from the associated neurotransmitters. Long term pain management of this manner can adversely affect the normal functioning of your nervous system, and also cause imbalance in your neurotransmitters. It is best to first assess the root causative factor and aim to resolve it. Recently, medical marijuana has also been made available to help deal with the pain in a naturally holistic and effective manner.

Is there a Natural Cure for Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, according to Ayurvedic contexture, occurs mainly due to vitiation or derangement of the Vata doshaVata is the most primary yet subtle bodily energy, that acts as a life force for every bodily system. It also co-ordinates, sustains and activates your sensory as well as motor organs. Treatment for fibromyalgia involves Herbal therapy and strict Diet control along with ‘panchkarma’  treatment (therapeutic application of infused oils and activated diatomaceous earth). The aim of the treatment is to rebalance the body’s Vata, and also simultaneously cleanse the body of accumulated toxins, which cause a hindrance to the normal ebb and flow of vital bodily fluids and nervous signals. The panchakarma treatment is helpful in relieving stress from integral meridian points. This can also be accomplished with other holistic practices such as Acupuncture, Reiki, or Pranic healing. But these therapies Must be in combination, to be maximally effective.
