What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural human condition that we all experience from time to time. It exists in us as a defence mechanism, to make you more alert for impeding eminent danger, like from being attacked by a predator, or in a mother to protect her young. Anxiety could be a mild intuitive fear that could last for a few minutes or full blown panic attack that could be recurrent and intense. In general it is a sinking feeling, often accompanied by sickness, nausea, loss of appetite, etc.

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural phenomenon, triggered by fear. It can be triggered due to a variety of reasons, such as work stress, exams, relationships or in general any situation that can be associated with a sense of uncertainty. Some people could be more prone to suffer from heightened anxiety, like if they’ve been through traumatic situations, or if they have been raised with an extra cautionary approach toward life, or even if their hormonal and neurotransmitter triggers are wired differently.
"The distinction between an anxiety disorder and just having normal anxiety is whether your emotions are causing a lot of suffering and dysfunction," - Sally Winston, Psychologist, co-director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorder Institute of Maryland in Towson.

What are the Symptoms of Anxiety?

Anxiety is caused due to emotional and/or psychological triggers which could vary in type, and intensity from person to person. The most common triggers for anxiety in our times are finance and relationships. Dealing with piling up bills and never ending expenses, is common and often a tricky situation in this unsure economy. But when this worrying transmutes to worrying  excessively about little every day things, is a preliminary sign of anxiety disorder. More anxiety causes symptoms such as lack of sleep, loss of appetite, nervous palpatations, etc.. As these indications become more chronic, the health repercussions become more severe, such as high blood pressure, cardiac arrests, breating difficulty, gastric disorders, etc.

What is the treatment for Anxiety?

Anxiety can be treated by one of or a combination of Medication, therapy and alternative therapy. Depending on the symptoms, severity and also on what the patient is more comfortable with.

Medication:

Conventional medication prescribed by physicians, psychiatrists, general practitioners, etc usually include anti-depressants and muscle relaxants. SSRIs (Selective Seretonin re-uptake inhibitors), such as citalopram, sertraline , paroxetine, fluoxetine, etc. These drugs block the re-uptake or reabsorption of serotonin, causing a pleasant mood and generally relaxed demeanor in the individual. These however may cause common disorders such as insomnia or sleepiness, weight gain and sexual dysfunction.

Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) work by inhibiting the re-uptake of serotonin and neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine etc. These drugs are considered as a first line of treatment, particularly for generalized anxiety disorder. Effective in eliminating anxiety and depression, SNRIs may cause side effects such as headache, insomnia, gastric discomfort, sexual dysfunction, and minor increase in blood pressure.

Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines include alprazolam, diazepam, clonazepam, and lorazepam. These medications are specific to temporarily ease the physical symptoms of anxiety by inducing relaxation and easing muscular tenseness. Dosages may need to be increased periodically, as it is easy to build tolerance. This is the reason that this class of drugs could easily cause dependency .

Tricyclic Antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine, and nortriptyline) are effective inn anxiety and depression, and comparatively less habit forming than Benzodiazepines. However they do cause some serious side effects such as constipation, urinary retention, orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure on standing), dry mouth, and blurry vision.
