What is Eczema?

Eczema (or dermatitis) literally in Greek means inflammation of the skin. It encompasses variety of skin conditions that cause dryness, itchy skin, inflammation, crusting, redness, etc. Over 230 million people worldwide are known to be affected with dermatitis. It can usually be contained with topical ointments and steroidal creams, although the rash could flare up again. There are however, herbal and holistic therapies that seem to work over time to completely control eczema.

What are the Symptoms of Eczema?

In most cases, one experiences itchiness on the effected part, sometimes even before the rash appears. The rash gives your skin a dry, scaly appearance, usually reddish in color at first and turns brown as it advances. In people with darker skin (higher melatonin pigmentation), the eczema may affect pigmentation, often altering the coloration of the skin around the affected area. Sometimes, there may be a crusty formation that could be oozing fluid, usually in infants. In some extreme cases of seborrheic dermatitis, pimples along the hairline, eyebrows, chest and back may appear, and may even cause hairloss.

What Causes Eczema?

Although the exact cause of Eczema is undetermined in western medicine, it has been attributed to be genetically associated. It is known however, that eczema is an auto-immune mediated response, due to an over-reactive immune system. What makes it hard to pinpoint exact causality, is that different people have different trigger factors. Some common triggers include exposure to certain allergens such as dander, certain chemicals in soaps or detergents, extreme hot or cold temperatures, stress, etc. Essentially anything that could alter or sensitize an immune response. Dermatatis is not contagious and although untreatable, can be controlled by recognizing and avoiding trigger factors.

Is Eczema treatable?

Although there is no drug or treatment in western medicine that is known to cure eczema, certain topical ointments and cortico-steroidal creams can be used to keep syptms in check and reduce itching. Moisturizing with emollients once a day could help reduce flare ups, in mild t moderate cases. In more severe cases of dermitisis, anti-histamnes such as diphenhydramine may be recommended. Occlusive dressings and emollients with added ceramides may be prescribed. Phytotherapy, or UV light treatment is also suggested for those who do not wish to stay on medication for a long time. The long-term safety of UV light therapy,  however is debatable, due to its effects on healthy skin cells.

Is there a Natural Cure for Eczema?

According to Ayurveda, eczema occurs due to an imbalance in all three of the doshas, or energy meredians of the human body. These doshas are Vatta, Kapha and Pitta. These three ‘doshas’ determine the balance of wind, water, fire, earth and ether within your body. Different types of eczema related symptoms are attributes to a shift in each of these balances

Shift in Vatta: Dry skin, severe itching and painful to touch

Shift in Pitta: Scaly skin, with oozing fluids. May be accompanied with fever and burning sensation

Shift in Kapha: Thickening of skin, inflammation, itchiness and oozing pus.

Once the physician has determined the type or causality of your condition, based on your presenting symptoms, an appropriate line of treatment is suggested to re-balance the right elements in your body. This can be achieved with a combination of herbal treatments, botanical ointments and strict diet control. This would include giving you a list of foods to avoid, which could trigger allergenic responses.
