What is Emphysema?

Emphysema is a chronic lung condition that causes difficulty in breathing. It is considered a prevalent type of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Emphysema is a progressive disease and its primary symptom is shortness of breath. Although it is considered uncurable, its symptoms can be controlled and with the right kind of treatment, further progression can be curtailed.

What causes Emphysema?

There are many causes or Emphysema, but the most common one is smoking. Essentially, the alveolar walls in the lungs are destroyed, thus reducing their elasticity and capacity to hold in oxygen. This results in an inadequate supply of oxygen to the body, and lowered Oxygen to Carbon Dioxide ratio. Recent research has shown genetic relevance to emphysema, but proper diagnosis is based on history, physical examination, and tests of pulmonary functionality.

How is Emphysema treated?

Although there is currently no known medical treatment to ‘cure’ emphysema, there are drugs that can help deal with, or subside symptoms and preventative measures that can help control the progression of the disease. These include bronchodilators, glucocorticoids, antibiotics and vaccines. Inhaled bronchodilators such as albuterol, salmeterol, tiotropium, etc are provided as nebulizers, much like in Asthma patients. These help the patient breathe better, but do not really contribute toward repairing the ruptured alveolar walls or reverse the condition. These drugs may also trigger side effects such as headache, nausea, stomach irritation and possibly bronchospasms and chest pain. Hence their usage and dosage needs to be constantly monitored.
